Volleyball Extends Sweep Streak to Three
MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team completed their third-straight sweep and improved to 3-2 with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 victory over Mercer (0-4) Wednesday evening in Macon. The Eagles limited their attack errors to 11 and posted a .236 hitting percentage for the win.
Georgia Southern finished without a player in double-digit kills for the first time this season but got a balanced attack from Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.), Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) and Meredith Paskert (Brecksville, Ohio). Paskert led the team with nine kills, while Sanford posted eight and Small five. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) ran the offense, tallying 26 out of the team's 33 assists.
GSU opened with a 25-18 first-set win, extending their streak to five-straight matches with a victory in the first set. The first set was a close one in the early going before the Eagles rattled off six-straight points to open up an 8-3 advantage. The Bears fought back to within three points at 18-15, but Georgia Southern outscored them 7-3 for the set win.
The Eagles cruised in the second set after a 13-3 start to the match and won 25-14 to take a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Mercer fought hard in their return from the break, but GSU prevailed 25-20.
Georgia Southern held Mercer to a .117 attack percentage in part due to the 13 digs by Lauren LaRocque (Frisco, Texas) and 11 by Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.). The Eagles also benefited from the Bears' 23 attack errors and eight service errors.
The Georgia Southern Volleyball team continues a string of seven-straight road games with three this weekend at the Varney's Invitational hosted by Kansas State. The Eagles take on the Wildcats in their first game at 1:30 p.m. EDT and return that night for a 6 p.m. match with BYU.
