2008 Volleyball Season Officially Underway

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern volleyball team held their first official workouts Friday morning at Hanner Fieldhouse under new head coach Chad Callihan.

Callihan welcomes back six returnees and eight new players.

“I think everybody’s excited – players, coaches – this has been a long time coming,” said Callihan. “With eight new faces we’re excited to get out here and see what we’ve got. I know the players have been working hard so they’re excited to have the opportunity to showcase what they’ve been doing in the offseason. It’s a good opportunity to get to know each other. We had a good team meeting last night and the girls are already beginning to bond well.”

Callihan makes his return to the Southern Conference after a year as an assistant at Georgia. He spent the previous four seasons at Appalachian State where he won two division titles and had three 20-win seasons.

The first week of practice will mean a focus on ball control.

“With eight new faces we’ll do a lot of passing and just get used to what we do – our offense, our defense, talking through how we like to train,” said Callihan. “There are a lot of little things that we’ll be trying to take care of this first week to get everyone acclimated and feel comfortable in the gym.”

The new season begins Aug. 29 at home against Jacksonville.
