Eagles Land at Colorado State for Hilton Classic
The tournament opens with a match-up of host Colorado State and Georgia Southern, Thursday at 7 p.m. local time for the first meeting between the non-conference schools in program history. Two contests will take place on Friday between the Eagles and UT Arlington at 4:30 p.m. followed by Colorado State and Ohio State that evening. Matches conclude on Saturday with three contests in Moby Arena. Georgia Southern and Ohio State will take the court first, then Colorado State and UT Arlington at 1 p.m. local time. UT Arlington and Ohio State will round out the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
Scouting the Eagles
Georgia Southern is coming off a 3-0 start to the 2009 campaign taking the Holiday Inn Invitational last weekend. The Eagles defeated Presbyterian College (3-0), Stetson (3-0) and Troy (3-1) to take the title. Sophomore outside hitter Bethany Sanford was named the SoCon Volleyball Player of the Week for her effort in the Holiday Inn with 37 kills on .364 hitting percentage in the season-opening tournament.
Scouting the Rams
Colorado State returns four starters and eight letterwinners from a 2008 squad that posted a 23-7 overall record and 12-4 Mountain West Conference mark. The Rams finished second in the conference and made their 14th consecutive trip to NCAA postseason play. CSU was picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll.
Scouting the Buckeyes
In his first season, head coach Geoff Carlston took Ohio State to a 12-20 record in 2008. The Buckeyes returned 10 letterwinners and six starters from last season’s squad and have jumped out to a perfect 4-0 start in 2009. Ohio State swept the Tribe Invitational to open its season with victories over Rider (3-0), North Carolina A&T (3-0), Maryland Eastern Shore (3-0) and host William & Mary (3-1). The meeting between the Eagles and Buckeyes will be the first.
Scouting the Mavericks
Six starters and nine letterwinners return from a 2008 squad that went 7-23 overall and 3-13 in Southland West Conference for UT Arlington. The Mavericks opened their 2009 campaign under the direction of sixth-year head coach Diane Seymour with a 1-4 record. UT Arlington opened its season at the Illinois State Redbird Classic, going 1-3. The Mavericks dropped matches to Oral Roberts (3-0), host Illinois State (3-0), but picked up a win over Gardner-Webb (3-0). UT Arlington then dropped a three set match to Arkansas on Tuesday evening. UT Arlington and Georgia Southern will meet for the first time on Friday.
