Smith and Brown Recognized by GA W.I.N.

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern track & field coaches Natalie Smith and Nicole Brown were rewarded for their hard work by Georgia Women’s Intersport Network (GA W.I.N.) last Wednesday in Atlanta.

Smith was recognized being named GAHPERD Female College Coach of the Year, while Brown was tabbed Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. Smith coached the track & field team to its first-ever Southern Conference outdoor championship in 2007 and Brown became Georgia Southern’s first track & field athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships.

The mission of GA W.I.N. is to promote public awareness for women’s involvement and achievement in athletics and to create a strong network for women and girls involved in sports.

Smith and Brown had special treatment while in Atlanta. After receiving the awards they were taken to the Georgia State Capitol where a press conference was held. The Atlanta Dream’s (WNBA) General Manager and Head Coach Marynell Meadors was the special guest for the occasion.

“This was a huge honor,” said Smith. “One that Nicole and I are both extremely proud of. We were both really excited about being nominated, but seeing that we were both winners it made it even more exciting and humbling.”

Smith and Brown will be back on the track this weekend as the indoor regular season concludes (Feb. 16) at the Carolina Chick-fil-A Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
