Eagles Earn Academic All-SoCon Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference teams for the 2007 spring season, including 11 Georgia Southern student-athletes.

Brian Pierce (Roswell, Ga.), Chris Shehan (Strasburg, Pa.) and Aaron Eubanks (Moultrie, Ga.) represented the baseball team.  Highlighting the softball team were Logan Free (Sandpoint, Idaho), Lindsey Hopkins (McDonough, Ga.) and Maria Laurato (New Orleans, La.).  Jessica Kerzie (Marietta, Ga.), Abby Bloom (Snellville, Ga.) and Nicole Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga.) represented the women’s outdoor track & field team.  And from the women’s tennis team were Heather Reynolds (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.).

As a whole, the 207 total student-athletes receiving the academic distinction averaged a 3.55 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.  Over half of the student-athletes hold a 3.5 and above.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring of 2007 and have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the spring season.

This is the fourth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.  The all-academic teams are made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference’s Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
