STATESBORO, Ga. – With 12 event victories and 28 overall top-three finishes, Georgia Southern literally had a Track & Field day at its home facility. In their first home meet since 2010, when the current seniors were freshmen, the Eagles posted season-best performances in multiple events and also made a mark in the record book.
In her first collegiate Discus throw, junior Aishya Wofford not only won the event, she broke the facility record by two inches and added her name to the Georgia Southern career list as well. Wofford’s distance of 43.10 (141’5”) placed her fourth on the all-time list for the Eagles. She also threw the Javelin in her first collegiate outdoor meet, placing fourth.
Even as they are just getting back into their normal events, the Eagles dominated in the 100, 200 and 400m sprints. Georgia Southern took the top six spots in the 200m and the top three of the 100m, posting the top-three season best times in each event. The efforts were duplicated in the one-two and three spots as senior Ebony Walker won the 100 and 200m Dashes with Jasmin Walker taking second and freshman Alyssa Felton in third in both events.
Kimberly Thomas tied her season best in the 400m Dash on her way to a win with a time of 57.45 and led three other Eagles across the finish line. Tiffany White posted her personal best in the 400, good for third place, Cherrelle King took fourth and Aliya Parker fifth. Parker had a fourth-place finish in the 200m race in her other individual performance.
Both hurdles events also showed the Eagles’ prowess with Dana Edwards winning both the 100 and 400m Hurdles. Lauren Toomer earned a second-place finish, just .07 seconds behind Edwards. Deanna Edwards (second) and Ashleigh Rasheed (third) helped the Eagles to a one-two-three finish in the 400m Hurdles with three of the best times this season.
In the distance events, senior Sara Curry approached this meet after a change in her training. Curry finished second in the 5,000 meter run, one of the last events of the day, after a second-place finish in the 1,500m Run earlier. Jami Joyner logged her first 1,500m event and also ran the 800m.
The Field events started the Eagles off on the right foot Friday with Camryn Coleman winning the Long Jump and Brianna Charles and Iesha Nichols rounding out the top five spots as all three had season-best marks. Ashleigh Rasheed continued the streak with a win in the Triple Jump and recorded her outdoor collegiate best at 11.48m (37’8”, wind 1.3). Keyanna Harris completed the trifecta in the jumps taking the victory in the High Jump with her outdoor best mark.
Kelsey Chandler made a significant improvement on her previous best with a 46.01m (150’11”) to win the Hammer Throw, just outside the Eagles’ career top-five list. She also took a second-place finish in the Discus behind Wofford. Alexis Jacobs, who along with Chandler and Mallory Fannin gave the Eagles three of the top four spots in the Hammer Throw, was second. She garnered the Eagles’ top finish, third-overall, in the Shot Put.
While the 4X100 was one of the first running events of the day, the 4X400 was the last, but the results were no different – Georgia Southern wins in both. Senior Amber Vaughn anchored the 4X100 for the best time of the outdoor season with Walker on the lead leg, Carter at two and Jasmine Billings on the third leg. Coach Mincey also shuffled the lineup in the 4X400 with Dana Edwards, King and Vaughn (3) and Thomas bringing to the finish for the “A” team.
The Eagles head to Florida for the next three weekends at the Florida State Relays, North Florida Invitational and Pepsi Florida Relays. Georgia Southern plays host to the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships April 20-21.
