STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track & Field team begins the 2013 outdoor season Friday-Saturday, March 1st-2nd at the UNF Spring Break Invitational. The Eagles will compete in 14 events at the Hodges Stadium Track & Field in Jacksonville over the two-day event, beginning with three field and four racing events Friday afternoon. Live results will be updated at http://www.halfmiletiming.com/.
The month of March begins a tough month of training for Georgia Southern and this weekend’s opening meet features a combination of core and non-core events for the student-athletes. Some Eagles will compete in their traditional events while others will be entered into longer-distance races.
“We are going to race some off events this weekend, working on some core things, and that will give us an opportunity to get some basic training back in so we can carry on to the outdoor season.” said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. “A lot of the short sprinters will be racing up to the 400m and the 400m runners will be racing even further up to the 800. They are excited, maybe a little bit leery, about this weekend, but they are ready.”
Jasmine Billings, Lauren Toomer and Deanna Edwards will open Friday’s track events in the 100m Hurdles with Billings and Amber Vaughn stepping to the blocks for the 100m race later that afternoon. Six Eagles will race up in the 400m Dash with Alyssa Felton, Jasmine Walker and Ebony Carter fresh off their appearances in Southern Conference Indoor Championships 200m finals. Kimberly Thomas and Cherrelle King, who both traditionally compete in the 200m and 400m, will try the 800m with Jami Joyner Friday. Both King and Thomas will also be entered in the 200m Saturday morning.
The Long Jump will be the first event contested Friday afternoon for the Eagles with Brianna Charles, Iesha Nichols, Ashleigh Rasheed and Taylor Johnson on the entry list. Johnson will also throw the Shot Put and Kelsey Chandler, Alexis Jacobs and Jasmine Johnson will participate in the Discus later in the day Friday. Early Saturday, all three individuals from the Discus, plus Charles, throw the Hammer.
Keyanna Harris, who tied for fourth in the High Jump at the SoCon Indoor Championships last weekend, starts Saturday morning as one of the top three seeds in her event. Four events for Ashleigh Rasheed on Saturday start with 200m, then the High Jump and Long Jump before finishing up her day on one of the 4X400m Relay teams. Rasheed will be one of eight Eagles in the 200m Dash featuring a mix of individuals in their traditional event or racing up.
Three of the four Georgia Southern finalists in the 60m Dash at the SoCon Indoor Championships will make their 2013 outdoor debut Saturday for the Eagles’ 4X100m Relay team. Vaughn (2) joins Walker (1), Billings (3) and Carter (4) to comprise that squad with Coach Mincey working on combinations and the chemistry for her 4X400m Relay team for the last event of the weekend.
The UNF Spring Break Invite is the first of the five March meets as the Eagles will prepare for the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville at the beginning of April and then Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Statesboro April 20th-21st.
“In March we are trying to get our minds ready and our bodies ready to get us ready to carry us into the postseason,” Mincey said. “We can train a little harder, get a lot of work in, and we will be working heavily on mental toughness. We want to make sure that we are executing and performing at the level we know we can.”
