Day 1 -- SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships Results
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Georgia Southern took the top two places in the Long Jump at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon as freshman Alyssa Felton captured the individual title and 10 team points (5.85m/19’2.50”). Jasmine Walker added eight more points for the Eagles with her second-place finish at 5.79m (19’0”) in the same event. Both individuals’ efforts rank among the top five in Georgia Southern history with Felton and Walker taking the number-four and number-five spots, respectively.
Four Eagles will make up the slate of eight finalists for the 60m Dash – the most ever in this final -- Sunday afternoon at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Senior Ebony Carter led the Georgia Southern short sprinters in the preliminaries with a 7.59, tying her best time of the 2012-13 season, with Jasmine Walker (7.64), Amber Vaughn (7.70) and Alyssa Felton (7.72) all recording their personal best times.
“We had some huge PRs, and we always go against the predictions,” Mincey said. “We treat the championships like a new start, we go in, we put the past behind us, good or bad, and we start over with what we need to do today. We competed against some talented student-athletes today, but we turned it up notch.”
Felton and Walker posed for their Long Jump awards seconds after they completed their 200m Dash heats as senior Ebony Carter joins them for the finals of the 200m Dash on Sunday. In the 200m finals, Georgia Southern will be represented by Felton (24.89), Carter (24.93), and Walker (25.49) with an indoor personal best by Walker to advance out of her heat. The three times currently hold the one, two and three spots for the season’s best times in this event.
Senior Jasmine Billings also ran a season best of 8.81 in the 60m Hurdles to guarantee her a spot on Sunday, and Lauren Toomer also made a reservation for the final eight with a 9.36. Sophomore Kimberly Thomas, who narrowly missed the finals last year, ran a 58.55 in the 400m preliminaries, and moves on to the finals in this event.
Freshman Keyanna Harris finished in a tie for fourth in the High Jump with a mark of 1.62m (5’3.75”) to add 4.5 points to the team total. Classmate Ashleigh Rasheed earned two team points for her seventh-place finish in the Pentathlon, racking up 3,076 points, a total good for fifth among Georgia Southern’s individual totals.
“I am excited about the depth we have in each event so far,” said Georgia Southern Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey. “Everyone is coming in and doing what we know they are capable of doing. We were stretched a little thin in some areas, so I was happy we were able to stay focused on what we were doing at the time.”
Georgia Southern has accumulated 24.5 points after the first day of the championships and stands in fifth place. Sunday’s events begin after 9:30 a.m. with the Weight Throw. The Eagles’ first racing event, the 60m Hurdles, begins at 12:30 p.m.
