Women's Tennis Defeats Mercer 7-0

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team picked up its second consecutive victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating Mercer 7-0 at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro.

The Eagles (2-3) gained the early advantage during doubles play, taking two of the three matches from the Bears, earning the doubles point. Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) were victorious at the No. 1 doubles slot downing Mercer’s tandem of Anna Wieslander and Priscilla Dias 9-8(3). GSU’s freshmen duo of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) improved their record to 3-2 on the season upending Cali Sachs and Irys Citko 8-1.

In singles action, GSU took all six matches to help seal the victory. Kegerreis earned a victory at the No. 1 singles position in a hard fought match against Wieslander, winning 6-4, 2-6, (11-9) improving her singles record to 4-1. Rolle and Beavers both notched straight set victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots respectively. Rolle also improved her singles record to 4-1 defeating Mercer’s Citko 6-1, 6-0.

Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.), Shea Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla.) and Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) each posted straight set victories on Sunday. Fuller has now reeled off three consecutive singles victories as she downed Kelly Blount 6-2, 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.

“I was really proud of how we competed in singles play,” said GSU coach Amy Bonner. “The last two matches have really given us confidence and will help us as the season progresses.”

Georgia Southern is back in action Saturday, February 23, when they head to Boiling Springs, N.C. to compete against Gardner-Webb. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
