Women?s Tennis Opens Fall Play at USC Upstate Fall Classic
“The team is really excited about getting to compete this weekend,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “We’ve been working really hard the past few weeks preparing and we’re looking forward to finally taking the court competitively.”
The Eagles will compete against some quality teams in the tournament as the 11-team field consists of USC Aiken, Anderson College, Augusta State, Campbell, East Tennessee State, Kennesaw State, Lenoir-Rhyne, Presbyterian College, Wofford and host USC Upstate.
Match play begins Friday morning at 10 a.m. with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The flighted tournament features two doubles draws and three singles draws, and will take place on the campuses of USC Upstate and Wofford. Friday’s action will be at Wofford with competition moving to USC Upstate on Saturday.
Georgia Southern returns seven letterwinners and adds six newcomers for the 2010-11 season. The Eagles will be led by seniors Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.), Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.).
The season-opening tournament will give the Eagles a chance to gain some early experience and test out new doubles pairings for the regular season.
“This will be a competitive tournament which gives us an opportunity to get some experience and match play in,” stated Bonner. “We will also get to see how our doubles teams come together, and with five newcomers, it will be exciting to see how each pair plays together.”
