Eagles Stumble at Elon
ELON, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team lost a tough one in Elon on Monday afternoon. The Eagles fell to the Phoenix by a 6-1 score. The Phoenix, winners of four of their last five contests, improve their record to 13-5 on the season with a 4-2 mark in SoCon action.
The Eagles (4-12, 1-6 SoCon) fell in an early hole when they were unable to grasp the doubles point. Phoenix Barbora Lazarova and Maria Camara Ruiz disposed of (Norcross, Ga.) and (St. Augustine, Fla.) at No. 2 doubles to open the scoring. The Phoenix clinched the doubles point when Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker defeated (Rome, Ga.) and (Kennesaw, Ga.) by an 8-3 score at No. 1 doubles. Elon's No. 1 doubles position improves its record to an outstanding 16-2 on the season with all but one contest featuring the Johnston/Jansaker duo. The Eagles did manage to salvage the No. 3 doubles match when (Vigo, Spain) and (Atlanta, Ga.) prevailed over Briana Berne and Katy Canada, 8-5.
The solid doubles play of the Phoenix carried over into singles action. The Eagles held leads in three singles matches but were denied in all but one of them. Lazarova notched the second point of the afternoon for the Phoenix when she downed Kitchen at No. 2 singles. Jansaker put Elon up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over (Alpharetta, Ga.). Camara Ruiz clinched the match victory for the Phoenix when she ousted (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) at No. 5 singles. Viviana Stavreva and Berne added wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles over Williams and Maffett to extend Elon's point total to six for the match. Garrido was the lone singles victor for the Eagles when she took her match to overtime and downed Johnston in a third-set match tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 11-9.
The Eagles will look to rebound when they return home for a Saturday bout against Davidson. Their second-to-last home match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at Hanner Tennis Complex.
