Women's Tennis Falls 6-1 to Davidson

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team dropped a hard fought match on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final of 6-1 to Davidson at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro.

Concerned about the possibilities of poor weather, both teams decided that it would be in their best interest to open the match with singles competition.

In singles play, GSU (8-8, 2-4 SoCon) dropped five of six matches, but gave Davidson all they could handle. Davidson claimed an early 3-0 advantage, but the Eagles continued to battle. Freshman Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) was victorious at the No. 3 position downing Kim Whelan 6-4, 6-0. The victory was Beavers’ 12th of the season. She remains first in the Southern Conference in wins from the No. 3 seed. After losing the first set 6-2, junior Kristi Kegerreis pushed the No. 1 singles match to a third set. The Fairfax, Va. native took the second set by a 6-0 decision, before falling 7-5 in the third set to Davidson’s Kelsey Linville.

In doubles action, Beavers and teammate Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) were ousted 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles position by Michele Fanney and Teresa Wang. Juniors Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) and Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) fell 8-4 from the No. 3 slot to Davidson’s tandem of Whelan and Alison Rauh.

Davidson improves their record to 12-3 on the season and remains undefeated in Southern Conference play with a record of 4-0.

Georgia Southern returns to the hard-courts on Saturday, April 5, when they travel to Elon, N.C. compete against Elon. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
