Women?s Tennis Faces Two SoCon Foes At Home
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (8-6, 2-3 SoCon) returns to the court after a 10-day layoff to compete against Chattanooga (8-7, 3-2 SoCon) and Samford (11-3, 3-2 SoCon) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The Eagles welcome the Mocs Saturday at 1 p.m. with Sunday's match against the Bulldogs set for a 12 p.m. start.
"The Chattanooga match is always a competitive one," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "We will be looking to our seniors for leadership as well as our doubles pairs to give us a strong start. Samford is a talented team as well, they have a lot of depth and are strong in both singles and doubles play. We are ready to compete this weekend and must show up ready to play."
Georgia Southern is led by senior Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) who moved to 11-2 in singles at the No. 2 seed with a three-set win over Elon's Bryn Knoury (March 21). The win marked Beavers seventh-straight victory. In doubles play, Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) are 4-1 at the top of the lineup, staying in the win column with four-straight wins.
Chattanooga posted a 7-0 shutout victory over Tennessee Wesleyan in its last contest Wednesday, March 30th. Sophomore Jenna Nurik won in straight sets at No. 1 to extend her dual record to 9-6. Nurik and Shaina Singh have a 10-4 dual match record in doubles play. The duo is 9-4 at the No. 2 seed and have one win at the top of the Mocs' lineup.
Samford blanked Wofford 7-0 in its last conference match Sunday, March 27th. The Bulldogs' Lindsey Mallory extended her winning streak to nine-consecutive matches at the No. 5 seed and improved her record in singles play to 10-1 this season. Madelle Janse van Rensburg owns 11 wins at the No. 3.
The Eagles closeout a six-match homestand against College of Charleston Tuesday, April 5th, at 3 p.m. and UNC Greensboro Friday, April 8th, at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles will celebrate three seniors, Ali Beavers, Ashley Hungerford and Melanie Rolle, on April 8th. The Eagles home schedule shuffled slightly this week as heavy rains postponed the Charleston match until April 5th in Statesboro. Georgia Southern will conclude its regular season Sunday, April 10th, with a noon matchup against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.
