Eagles Down Catamounts 4-0, Advance to Second Round of SoCon Tournament
CHARLESTON, S.C. The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles downed Western Carolina 4-0, at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston.
GSU notched its 11th victory of the season, while the loss ends the Catamounts season.
The Eagles (11-10) won the doubles point and gained the early 1-0 advantage heading into singles competition. The freshmen tandem of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) were first off the court as they upended Western Carolina’s Amanda Massey and Mariona Trilla Jane 8-3. Juniors Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory over Emily Turke and Susanna Sjokvist.
In singles action, Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) gave Georgia Southern a 2-0 lead from the No. 5 position ousting Sjokvist 6-0, 6-1. Shea Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla.) downed Turke in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 6 seed giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage. Beavers sealed the match for GSU notching her 15th win of the season as she defeated Massey 6-3, 6-0 from the No. 3 slot.
Georgia Southern is back on the hard-courts tomorrow, as they face the second-seeded Cougars from the College of Charleston. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 and will be played at the Farmfield Tennis Center in Charleston.
