Dzuba, Garrido Claim Singles Titles in SpringHill Suites Invitational
“This was a great weekend for us,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner.” I'm proud of the way our team competed and I am looking forward to a promising spring. Ashley [Hungerford] and Melanie [Rolle] did a great job showing their leadership today and two of our newcomers won their singles flights, so it made for a strong showing this weekend on our home courts.”
On the final day of competition, Garrido delivered a 6-0, 6-1 ousting of Lucie Payrat of Mercer to take the orange draw singles title. Garrido went 3-0 in singles action over the weekend, while Dzuba went 2-0 to claim the green draw singles title. Dzuba dropped only two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sabrina Mendez of South Carolina State.
In the remaining singles action, Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) topped Jennifer Lada of Mercer, 6-2, 6-0, in the red draw, while Hungerford fell to eventual-champion Maria Cracium of SCSU in the gold draw. Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) fell to SCSU’s Akilah James, 6-1, 6-3 in the orange draw. Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) suffered a straight set loss to Laura Bosneag of SCSU in the navy draw, while Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.) picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katie Berry of Western Carolina in the purple flight. Also in the purple flight, Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell in straight sets to Suhaila Jad of SCSU. Rounding out singles play in the pink draw, Sydney Brown (Johns Creek, Ga.) fell in a super tiebreak to Sarah Hanna of Mercer, while Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) defeated Fanni Fricska of SCSU, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.
Two rounds of doubles action occurred on day two of the fall tournament. Due to a last minute change, Jones and Bollaci competed in flight A doubles action, falling to teammates Rolle and Maffett, 8-2. Both duos fell in their second matches. Pairing up in flight B doubles, Garrido and Hungerford grabbed two wins on the day to take the title with a 3-0 record on the weekend. The Eagle pair outlasted Isabella Glinska and Karen Jiminez of WCU, 9-8, before defeating Payrat and Stephanie Cohen of Mercer, 8-2.
The final two Eagle tandems split matches in flight C. Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Dzuba teamed up to edge Layne Arnold and Barry of Western Carolina, 8-1, before falling to SCSU’s Jad and Bosneag, 8-3.
