Women's Tennis Defeats Hampton 5-2, Earns Fourth Straight Victory

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team notched its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Pirates of Hampton 5-2 at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro.

The Eagles (7-4, 1-0 SoCon) have won seven of their last eight dual matches and improve their record to 5-1 at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Hampton falls to 0-6 on the season.

GSU used a complete team effort to earn the victory. Nine of Georgia Southern’s 10 student-athletes competed in the match against the Pirates.

The Eagles took the early advantage taking the doubles point from Hampton. Juniors Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) extended their unbeaten streak to 6-0. The pair knocked off Syreeta Thompson and Kelli Young by an 8-5 decision from the No. 2 position. Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) and Kelli Helms (Cairo, Ga.) were successful from the No. 3 slot defeating Janelle Small and Maya Morgan 8-2.

In singles play, freshman Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) improved her dual record to 9-2, ousting Na-Yhun Baek in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 from the No. 1 seed. Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) posted her first win of the season from the No. 4 position downing Young 6-1, 6-0.

“Today’s performance was a total team effort,” said GSU coach Amy Bonner. “We were able to get production from a lot of individuals and that will help us as we get deeper into conference play.”
