Women's Tennis Starts Conference Play on Wednesday
STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team is getting back to work against No. 67 College of Charleston on Wednesday after more than a week off. The Eagles are opening conference play with a home match at 2:30 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
"They're always a tough team but this is a match where we can go out there and have nothing to lose and the girls are excited about that and they have been working hard," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "Really, the past several weeks, our whole season leads up to these Southern Conference matches and we've been working hard in preparation."
The Eagles currently stand 2-3 on the season with their most recent win coming against Mercer on Feb. 10. In a 6-1 win, freshman Mary Phillips Smith clinched the match for her career first collegiate victory.
The College of Charleston is coming off a 6-1 loss to N.C. State but has been ranked in the ITA National Rankings all season. It is the second time this year that the Eagles will face a ranked opponent, taking on Auburn earlier in the season.
After Wednesday's match, the Eagles have a quick turnaround as they travel to Troy, Ala. for a 11 a.m. match up with Troy on Saturday, Feb. 23. They will resume conference play the next weekend, taking on Furman and Wofford.
