Eagles Set to Face Davidson in Quarterfinal Round of SoCon Championship
Georgia Southern took the regular season match-up against Davidson in Statesboro this year by a mark of 5-2. The win marked the first time the Eagles defeated the Wildcats since a 6-3 victory in 2000. Georgia Southern took five singles matches to clinch the team win before dropping the doubles point, which was played last due to inclement weather.
“We are looking forward to competing at the Southern Conference Tournament this weekend. We have been working hard and preparing for this tournament all year. We are looking again to give our seniors a memorable run at the Southern Conference Title,” said head coach Amy Bonner.
Georgia Southern concluded regular season play sporting a 13-6 overall record and 7-3 against league opponents, taking seven of its last nine matches. Pacing the team this season was sophomore Melanie Rolle who competed mainly at the No.4 seed. Rolle posted an unscratched 13-0 ledger from the four seed after rolling to a 12-match win streak from Feb. 14 through April 15. Fellow classmate Ali Beavers went 11-6 from the two seed, while senior Shea Huxtable posted a 9-2 mark from the sixth seed.
Completing conference play against Samford, the Eagles recorded a 38-22 overall dual singles mark against league opponents this season. Rolle leads the team with most conference wins with nine, followed closely by Huxtable who gathered eight. Rolle also garnered the most singles wins overall this season with 19; Beavers comes in a close second with 17.
Davidson enters the tournament with an even 11-11 record, going 6-4 in league competition. The Wildcats dropped three of their five matches in the month of April and sport a 3-6 record on the road this season. Virginia Berry enters the match leading with a team-best 16-6 singles mark, 9-1 against conference opponents.
The two conference foes have faced each other twice in the past three tournaments. The Wildcats took both decisions over the Eagles.
