Women's Tennis Plays Host to Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson
STATESBORO, GA. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis (3-4) team plays two non-conference matches this week as it plays host to Florida Gulf Coast (4-3) Wednesday, March 9th at 2:30 p.m. and Stetson (9-1) Thursday, March 10th at 2:30 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex. After having the week off from competition, the Eagles are ready to go back to work.
"We are looking forward to playing two non-conference opponents this week and this will help prepare us for a big weekend at Davidson and Appalachian State," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "Florida Gulf Coast is a team that we have never played before. It's nice to come across some different teams through the course of the season to see how your team compares and to work on things with your players before more Southern Conference matches come around. Stetson always has a talented team and we are looking forward to some tough competition against two strong regional opponents."
Toledo defeated Florida Gulf Coast 5-2 on its home courts on Monday prior to FGCU traveling to Statesboro as sophomore Morgan Bechtel and freshman Bettina Botha won the points for the FGCU Eagles. The FGCU Eagles are 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun after posting their first conference win over USC Upstate, 6-1, last weekend.
Stetson and Georgia Southern have one of the oldest rivalries in the history of the Eagle program with the first meeting taking place in 1980. The Eagles and Hatters met in 2010 after a three-year hiatus with Stetson taking the 6-1 win in Deland, Fla. The Hatters have won two-straight matches and will play their third match in a four-day stretch against the Eagles. Stetson defeated Eastern Kentucky 6-1 on Monday and Penn 4-3 on Tuesday. The Hatters' only loss came against A-Sun conference foe Campbell when the Camels snapped their seven-match win streak with a 4-3 win on Sunday.
After the non-conference contests during the week, GSU is scheduled for two SoCon matches against Davidson (Saturday, March 12th) and Appalachian State (Sunday, March 13th).
