Women's Tennis Competes in ETSU Invitational.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team concluded its first tournament of the 2007-2008 season, Sunday, at the ETSU Fall Invitational, held in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Eagles squared off against Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Gardner-Webb, Radford, Tennessee Tech, Mars Hill College, Western Carolina, and Carson Newman in the individuals singles and doubles tournament.
In the Gold Singles Division Georgia Southern’s Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) earned her first collegiate title of the 2007-2008 season by defeating Olya Batsula of East Tennessee State 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Kegerreis breezed by the competition defeating Abby Diminic of Presbyterian and Diana WoodCock of Tennessee Tech setting up the match up with Batsula.
Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga./Kell) marched through the Yellow Singles Division upending Haley Ferris and Katelyn Doss on her way to defeating Amanda Massey of Western Carolina to claim the championship.
Georgia Southern also claimed a doubles championship in the Red Doubles Division as the tandem of Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville) and Kelli Helms (Cairo, Ga./Abraham-Baldwin) knocked off Radford’s Neely Edwards and Antonietta Iosue by a score of 8-4 in the finals.
The tandem of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns-Bennett) and Caforio fell in the Blue Doubles championship to Brittany Stewart and Whitney Trotter of East Tennessee State 8-5. They had defeated teams from Appalachian State and Radford heading into their bout with East Tennessee State.
Junior Shea Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs came up short in her bid for a championship in the Brown Singles Division, falling in the semi-finals to Trotter of East Tennessee State losing by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Helms also came up short losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the Black Singles championship to Caroline Mauch of Appalachian State.
Georgia Southern returns to the courts on October 5, as they head to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the JU Invitational.
