Eagles Challenge at ITA Southeast Region Championships
The day opened with the first round of doubles action as two Eagle tandems represented Georgia Southern. Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) and Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) took the court together to face Georgia’s Cameron Ellis and Naoko Ueshima. The Eagles kept the match close, but suffered an 8-5 loss to the Bulldogs. Pushing their match into a hard-fought tiebreak, Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) battled Florida State’s Amy Sargeant and Federica Suess to the last point. At an 8-all tie, the tandems forced a tiebreak as the Seminoles fought off three Eagle match points to take the win, 9-8 (7).
In singles action, senior Kegerreis dropped a straight-set decision to Steton’s Breanna Atkinson, 6-4, 6-3. Kegerreis will challenge Ecaterina Vasenina of South Florida in the consolation singles bracket Saturday morning. Facing off against the No. 28th-ranked player in the country, Katie Rybakova of Florida State, Beavers garnered six games off the Seminole, but fell, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round. Beavers moved into the consolation draw where she will face Christine Seredni of Florida International on Saturday.
Closing out the Eagles in singles, junior Rolle took on Natalia Guevara of South Florida pushing the match into three sets. Rolle rebounded from dropping the first set, 6-2, to take the second, 6-3, and force a deciding third set. Guevara took the match with a 6-0 third set decision. Rolle will take on Katherine Durden of FAMU in the back draw tomorrow.
Play continues Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. with doubles action, followed by singles action and consolation singles.
