Lady Eagles Welcome North Florida and Hampton to Open Their 2009 Home Season

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team opens its 2009 home schedule on January 31 when it hosts North Florida in a 1 p.m. match. The Lady Eagles then host Hampton on Sunday with a slated 12 p.m. first serve.

“We are looking forward to playing back on our home courts against two very competitive teams,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “We are going to use our experience from last weekend when facing both these teams.”

Georgia Southern is coming off a successful season opening road trip last weekend when it traveled to Georgia State and Kennesaw State. The Lady Eagles dropped their season opener at Georgia State but quickly rebounded with a 4-3 decision at Kennesaw State. The doubles tandem of Christine Caforio and Melanie Rolle captured the doubles point for Georgia Southern at the two seed with an 8-4 victory. Caforio and Rolle each added singles victories for Georgia Southern before the match was clinched at the two seed by Ali Beavers.

The Lady Eagles defeated Hampton in 2008 by a 5-2 decision. Georgia Southern took all three doubles matches and recorded singles victories from four positions. Beavers and Rolle both recorded singles victories for the Lady Eagles. In addition, Caforio and Kelli Helms each earned both singles and doubles victories in the winning effort by Georgia Southern.

“We beat Hampton last year in a very close match. So we know it is going to be a tough Sunday. But we are looking to come out on top with a couple wins on our opening home weekend,” said Bonner.
