ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team finished third out of 13 teams at the CCSA Championships held in Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday, Feb 21. The Eagles placed an athlete in every event final, broke one school record, accumulated 11 more personal bests and earned four podium spots at the last day of the meet.
“This morning was not our best but we certainly came back towards the end. Our milers did a really nice job, our divers did a really nice job and I believe that the third day is always about being tough because no one feels great on the third day and I felt we did well. I’m happy,” said Head Coach Nate Kellogg.
Freshman Kylee Parsons finished out her strong first championships appearance by earning another podium spot, her third in three days. The rookie swam the 1650 Free in a new personal best 17:10.78, good for a third place finish.
The diving squad also earned two podium spots in the three-meter dive today. Junior Sara Meisenhelder finished second with a score of 272.00 after qualifying as the number eight seed this morning and freshman Emma Weisel qualified for her career first finals and made it worth it, earning bronze with a new personal best of 268.00.
“I thought the divers dove really well in finals. They were extremely composed and showed what great divers they were and that landed them on the podium. I’m extremely proud of them,” said Diving Coach David Giambra.
The 400 Free Relay team existing of Parsons, Christina Moran, Devan White and Elaina Lanson finished up the last day of the championships with another school record breaking performance of 3:25.91. The foursome earned a bronze medal for their efforts.
In her last race ever, the 200 Fly final, Lindsay Mullican made sure she went out on a high note. The senior already set a new lifetime best this morning but beat it one last time at night for a sixth place finish with a new school record time of 2:04.14.
Lanson swam in her third individual final in as many days. The sophomore entered the 100 Free final placed eighth but improved her ranking to seventh with a time of 51.16. Courtney Harrison earned important points for the Eagles in the 200 Breast, finishing fifth with a time of 2:19.25. Freshman Moran finished sixth in her 200 Back final with a time of 2:03.10.
In three days of competition the Eagles totaled eight new school records and 48 new personal bests.
“The future is bright. We have really good teams and people that buy into things. We’re only scratching the surface of this team’s potential,” said Kellogg.
Before the start of finals, the CCSA honored all senior swimmers and divers including Georgia Southern’s Emily Fell, Piri Humphries, Alden Lynch and Mullican.
