Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving Victorious in Regular-Season Finale
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team (13-4) closed out its regular season and sent its six seniors out with a win at home Saturday, January 29th. The Eagles outscored Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foe North Florida (169-116) in the 16-event dual meet at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC).
Georgia Southern won 14 of the 16 events, including three events where the Eagles finished first, second and third. Overall, the Eagles recorded 23 first- and second-place finishes throughout the day. Senior Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) paced Georgia Southern with three individual first-place finishes.
Today's meet marked the last home meet for seniors Bevillard, Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada), Meredith Fehr (Matthews, N.C.), Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) and Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.).
Bevillard won the 100 back (59.28), 100 free (53.31) and 200 I.M. (2:10.03). Teammate Meg Beasley (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished the 100 back in second place (1:03.23). Bevillard, along with classmates Goodman, Haudenschild and Stephens, helped the Georgia Southern "A" team record a first-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay (4:03.98). Goodman swam the backstroke leg, followed by Haudenschild with the breaststroke and Bevillard with the butterfly. Stephens anchored the relay, swimming the freestyle leg.
Goodman's first-place time of 2:09.16 in the 200 back helped the Eagles run away with the 'Top 3' finishes in the event. Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga.) and Beasley finished second (2:13.60) and third (2:14.45) in the event. She and Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) took first (2:12.63) and second place (2:13.52) in the 200 fly and Stockwell also recorded a second-place finish in the 100 fly (1:00.82).
The Eagles swept both the 200 and 1,000 free events. Lindsay Mullican (Lancaster, Pa.) led the charge in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.54. Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C) followed, taking second- (1:58.87) and third-place (2:00.90) honors. Mullican recorded another first-place finish in the 500 free (5:15.84) and Stephens finished in second place (5:20.39) in the event. Campbell, who captured first in the 50 free (25.02), took first in the 1,000 event (10:37.26). Humphries and Fehr placed second (10:55.45) and third (11:07.64), respectively, in the 1000 free to complete the sweep.
Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.) finished in front as she tapped the wall for a first-place time of 1:07.37 in the 100 breaststroke. Ostrom also added a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:29.08).
On the boards, Georgia Southern's Sara Meisenhelder (Carmel, Ind.) placed first on the 3-meter board. Her score of 256.40 barely missed the University 3-meter record of 256.65 set in 2005 by Leslie Williams. Meisenhelder also won on the 1-meter board (251.05).
Georgia Southern closed out the day taking first and second place in the 400 free relay. The Georgia Southern "A" team, comprised of White, Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.), Harrison, and Stephens, won the relay in a time of 3:40.81. Goodman, Humphries, Mullican and Stockwell lifted the Georgia Southern "B" team to a second-place finish (3:42.49).
The win over North Florida gives Georgia Southern an all-time 15-3 record at the RAC and a sweep in its home pool for the 2010-11 season. The Eagles added to that record this past October when the team defeated College of Charleston (128-99) and SCAD (139-73).
"I think the comfort factor as well as the familiarity with the pool plays a big role with our success at home," stated Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. "The atmosphere at our home meets also play a big role. The environment is great and the home crowd is always energized for our meets."
With the regular season in the books, the Eagles will start preparations for the CCSA Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., February 17-19th.
"We just have little specific things that we want to continue to work on in our training leading up to the CCSA Championships," added Coach Kellogg. "The hard work has already been done, we do that from October to January. During this time of the year it's about letting the body rest and recover, and work on the details. That will hopefully allow us to swim fast in February.
