Laliberte Pitches Softball to Series Win at App State
GSU wins the series 2-1 and goes to 32-27 overall on the season and 11-7 in the SoCon. ASU drops to 10-35 and 6-10.
“I thought we did a good job,” said GSU head coach Natalie Poole. “I knew there was going to be a lot of similarities to the first game so I was hoping that somehow we’d make some better adjustments today. I felt confident in our pitching and I felt like they’d keep us in the ballgame. The only question was if we’d make those adjustments, and we did. We beat them with the ball on the ground and that definitely made a difference.”
Senior Aubrey Thweatt (Georgia, Vt.), sophomore Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) and junior Amanda Hall (Haddock, Ga.) each had two hits and scored a run.
The Eagles batted around in the fourth and got five straight hits to start the inning. Sophomore Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) had a two-RBI single and Hall and junior Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.) added run-scoring singles.
“I think a lot of times when we get in those situations it’s hard to stop us,” said Poole. “We’re aggressive, we make good decisions and once that momentum goes we keep rolling with it. We did that and it was hard to stop. I’m proud of my kids for building on that and taking advantage of the inning because it could have been shut down at any time.”
Laliberte (15-11) did not allow a runner past second base and struck out five to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
“I was really pleased with her performance,” said Poole. “She gave up less hits than she did yesterday and only had one walk. When that’s happening you know she’s doing a good job. She actually didn’t have her curveball today and she was still able to be successful by showing the look of the curveball and coming back and beating them on the other half of the plate. Whenever you can do that it’s definitely impressive.”
Kayla Richardson (6-17) gave up 10 hits and five earned runs for App State.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season May 3-4 at home against Chattanooga.
