Johnson Tabbed To Work With Chicago Bandits Coaching Staff
ELGIN, Ill. (Georgia Southern) - For the remaining 48 games this summer and the postseason, Georgia Southern University Softball Coach Maggie Johnson will join the Chicago Bandits of the National Professional Fastpitch League. Chicago Bandits general manager Aaron Moore announced the addition of Johnson as the third coach to the Bandits coaching staff Tuesday (June 15).The Bandits are coached by Mickey Dean, who is the head coach at Radford where Johnson was previously an assistant coach.
"I am appreciative and excited about the opportunity to work with Mickey Dean and the Chicago Bandits," said Johnson. "Working with a program and with athletes that play the game of softball at the highest level is an amazing honor, and I look forward to contributing to the success of the Bandits this season."
Johnson became the fourth head coach in Georgia Southern fastpitch history in June, 2008. The Raleigh, N.C., native led the Eagles to a 59-51 (28-19 Southern Conference) record in two years, posting the highest winning percentage after two seasons.
"I look forward to working with her again," said Bandits head coach Mickey Dean. "She was my assistant at Radford and I feel she'll be a great addition to our staff because she's been a student of the game and knows the game very well."
Johnson guided the Eagles to their fourth straight championship game appearance in the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament, and led Georgia Southern to a tie for second place in the conference regular season in 2010. Under her direction, Eagles players have combined for 15 Southern Conference season honors, including Player of the Year in 2010, Pitcher of the Year in 2009 and 2010, and Freshman of the Year in 2009.
The Eagles head coach will return to Georgia Southern after the conclusion of the season. The Bandits wrap up the regular season at home against the Tennessee Diamonds on Aug. 22. The Championship Series is scheduled for Aug. 25 - Aug. 29.
