Softball Flashback: GSU 3, UTC 1 (April 13, 1996)

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team kicked off a four-game series against Chattanooga with a 3-1 win in game one. The Eagles went on to take the series and win their first regular season Southern Conference title.
GSU got off to a hot start scoring runs in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Sheri Russo drove in Mandi Dunn with a base hit single in the first inning and scored again in the third inning on an error.
The Mocs and Eagles traded a run in the fifth inning. Jessica Brown hit a solo shot in the top half of the inning to give UTC its lone run. McCaine Lowder doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Russo in the bottom half of the inning. Russo went one for one with two RBIs in game one.
Vanessa Fawcett earned her 15th win after allowing one run on nine hits while striking out seven.
Tonya Whitted and Lowder had multi-hit games, both picking up two hits each.
The 1996 team went on to win three of the four-game series and secured its first regular season SoCon title.
