Eagles Eliminated With 2-1 Loss To UNC Greensboro
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Georgia Southern) - The Eagles were eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 2-1 loss to UNC Greensboro Friday.
The Spartans (27-29) got a complete game by Amber Harrell (15-15). The senior held the Eagles to one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) threw a strong performance, allowing just two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. With the loss, Streetmon fell to 19-12 on the season.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, the Eagles rallied with hits by sophomore Mackenzie Williams (Baxley, Ga.) and senior Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) after senior Kelly Burnett (Boyton Beach, Fla.) reached on an error.
Burnett scored on Iduate's single, but the comeback fell short when UNCG rightfielder Laura Olenderski made a running grab near the rightfield line to retire sophomore Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) and end the game.
The Spartans scored their first run in the top of the third inning when Brittany Ausley touched home on a double-steal, and added what proved to be the winning run with an RBI-single by Kristen Gabel in the top of the seventh.
Iduate finished the day 3-for-4, setting a single-season Southern Conference record, hitting .450 on the season.
Junior Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) and Streetmon were among 10 players from three schools named to the All-Tournament Team.
Smith was 2-for-9 during the tournament, but both hits were home runs, including a two-run home run against Chattanooga, leading the Eagles to a 3-0 win in the elimination game. She also earned the win in the circle against host Chattanooga, holding the top-seed scoreless on four hits in 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Streetmon worked 15.2 innings in the circle over the Eagles' three games, holding opponents to five runs on 14 hits. She struck out 11 batters and finished with a 2.23 ERA, but only got credit for one save as Georgia Southern suffered a pair of one-run losses.
