Softball Hits Way to 6-3 Win
GSU (23-22, 5-4 SoCon) takes the weekend series two games to one after a split on Saturday. Elon drops to 16-16, 5-4.
“We had a real nice talk this morning about finishing strong and what beating this team would mean for us in terms of conference and in showing more excitement because I feel like we show more excitement in game one and level off in game two,” said GSU head coach Natalie Poole. “We talked about excitement and passion and I think they brought that today.”
Of Georgia Southern’s 13 hits, six came from the top three positions in the batting order. Senior Aubrey Thweatt (Georgia, Vt.), sophomore Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) and junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, in addition to scoring a combined four times.
“Anytime they’re getting on, especially in the leadoff positions, we usually score,” said Poole. “And four of our runs were scored by them. We definitely feel like we do a better job when that happens.”
Just like the series opener on Saturday, the Eagles scored three times in the first, twice in the second and once in the third.
Sophomore Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) drove in Siliga and Iduate with a single in the first, the first of her two hits on the day.
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) retired 15 of the first 17 batters she faced before getting into trouble in the sixth when Elon scored all three runs. Laliberte (11-7) finished the game with five strikeouts and allowed one earned run and five hits.
“I don’t feel like they ever got a handle on her, we just allowed the momentum to shift” said Poole. “And when that begins to happen they start to feel more confident and then it’s a whole different ballgame. I thought we got a handle on it pretty quickly but I’m very pleased with her performance.”
Elon starter Pam DelPizzo (4-6) gave up all 13 hits and six runs (two earned) in five innings of work.
Melanie Helterbran had two hits and the team’s only RBI.
The Eagles go outside conference play Wednesday when they host Florida A&M in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
