First Half Goal Lifts Appalachian State Past Georgia Southern, 1-0

BOONE, N.C. – Shannon Healy’s 30th-minute goal put Appalachian State in front 1-0 and the Mountaineers held Georgia Southern scoreless for a Southern Conference win Sunday afternoon (October 10) in ASU Soccer Stadium. ASU improved to 4-5-4 overall and 1-2-3 in league play, while the Eagles went to 5-8 and 3-3 in conference action.

Five different Eagles posted shots on goal while McKenna Storey (Medford, Ore.) and Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) each added a shot for the Eagles who accumulated seven shots against the Mountaineers. ASU also posted seven shots, four on goal, led by Kara Buono with two shots on goal. Both teams took four shots in the first half and three shots in the second half.

Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) took Georgia Southern’s first shot on goal in the 11th minute as Mountaineer goalkeeper Caroline Clarke picked up her first of five saves. Freshman Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) made three saves for the Eagles.

Katy Phillips (Ocala, Fla.) made the Eagles’ last attempt to tie the score with a shot on goal in the 88th minute, but Clarke came up for the Mountaineers with the save.
