UNC Greensboro Garners Victory over Eagles

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision, Sunday afternoon, at UNCG Soccer Stadium after the Spartans outshot the Eagles 28-5.

The Eagles fall to 2-8-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.  The Spartans (7-3-1) keep their unbeaten streak alive at 17 games while maintaining a clean conference slate (4-0-0).

As a result of tough defense on both sides of the field, it took almost the entire first half for the game’s first goal to occur.  Though Georgia Southern peppered the goal with shots courtesy of Ashley Toussiant (Warner Robins, Ga.), Katie Gosnell (Charleston, S.C.) and Michelle Berard (Kennesaw, Ga.), it was UNC Greensboro that ended the drought in the 43rd minute when Heather Mitrisin sent a corner kick flying into the back of the net for a 1-0 Spartan lead.

The Spartans eventually outshot the Eagles 13-3 in the first half before heading into the locker room.

“I thought we played well in the first half,” said head coach Ashley Hart.  “We played hard and created some opportunities.  I thought that we played organized.”

UNC Greensboro continued to pressure the front in the second half.  Mary Kate Towne gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage in the 54th minute.  Mitrisin sparked the scoring opportunity after feeding the ball to teammate Jen Bronson who found Towne in the middle of the box for the quick goal.

UNCG added another insurance goal in the 74th minute off the foot of Kelly Attayek.

Junior Holli Finneren (Lake Orion, Mich.) produced the Eagles’ final shot of the match at the 80:55 mark, but was saved by Barrie Vogel.

Lauren Santos, Heather Smith (Kingwood, Texas), Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.), Laura Smith (Buford, Ga.), Colleen Deignan (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Abby Wheeler (Bozeman, Mont.) did a good job of limiting the good opportunities that Greensboro had,” said Hart.

Goalkeeper Lauren Santos made 10 saves during the entire 90 minutes of play, while UNCG’s Barrie Vogel stopped three shots on the day.

The Eagles will return back home to Statesboro for a SoCon match-up with the Furman Paladins, Thursday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
