Charleston Claims 2-0 Victory over Eagles

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team fell, 2-0, Thursday evening at Charleston, in a Southern Conference clash at Patriots Point Field.

The Eagles drop to 2-7-0 overall and pick up their first conference blemish (1-1-1).  The Cougars improve to 5-5-1 and pick up their second league victory (2-0-1) on the season.

Three of the Eagles four first-half shots were on goal.  Junior Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robins, Ga.) tallied the game’s first shot in the third minute, but it was stopped by Cougar keeper Sarah Wiggers.

Later in the 19th and 22nd minutes, senior Katie Gosnell (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Heather Smith (Kingwood, Texas) fired another pair of shots on goal, but Wiggers was there to make the save.

Seconds later, Charleston was the first to get up on the scoreboard, thanks to Christy Barrow from eight yards out, assisted by Brittany Schneider from the right side.

In the 28th minute, Schneider managed to fight her way through three GSU defenders, shot from the middle of the box and gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish.

“We possessed the ball well, but we didn’t make the most of our opportunities,” said head coach Ashley Hart.  “Heather Smith did a good job getting the ball forward out of the back and helped create some dangerous opportunities in front of the goal, but we just weren’t able to capitalize on them.”

While managing to produce five more shots in the second stanza, the Cougars were able to keep the Eagles to just two shots.

One of Georgia Southern’s best scoring opportunities in the second half came off the foot of Laura Smith (Buford, Ga.) who’s shot in the 58th minute hit the post.

Charleston held a 10-6 advantage in shots, while both teams tallied two corner kicks, apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) made two saves in 90 minutes of play, while Charleston keeper Wiggers stopped three shots en route to a shut-out win.

The Eagles continue their road trip as they next face UNC Greensboro, Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
