Women’s Soccer Closes 2012 Regular Season at Home Against Davidson
VIDEO: Preview interview with Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer faces Davidson in the 2012 regular season finale on Wednesday night at Eagle Field. The Eagles can earn a berth in the 2012 SoCon Playoffs through two different scenarios.
The first scenario requires the Eagles to defeat Davidson. That win when combined with losses or draws by both Western Carolina and The Citadel would give the Eagles the eighth seed. The other scenario involves the Eagles drawing against Davidson. With a draw, GSU would need The Citadel to lose its finale and Western Carolina to draw or lose its finale. A draw by Western Carolina would put the Catamounts in a tie with GSU which the Eagles would win by virtue of a regular season win over WCU.

Sophomore Sydnie Van Curen paces the GSU offense with five goals this year. A pair of freshman, Nora El-Shami and Stephanie Gratto scored GSU’s goals on Sunday afternoon to down Wofford, 2-1. Both Eagles picked up their fourth goals of the season to join Courtney Collins in a tie for second place on the GSU scoring chart this year.
Georgia Southern’s defensive corps has allowed less 1.01 goals per match with six shutouts this season. Goalkeeper Katie Merson has made 84 saves in goal with a 7-7-4 record in 1,700 minutes this year. The Eagles as a team are 3-6-1 in SoCon games.
Davidson is 7-8-3 on the year with a 5-4-1 mark in the SoCon. Julia Singley, Stephanie Piperno and Rachel Newmister have four goals each this year for the Wildcats. Davidson dropped its last outing, 2-0, against Furman. The Wildcats will enter the 2012 SoCon Tournament as either the fifth or sixth seed
