Women’s Soccer Hosts First Night Game at Eagle Field on Friday

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer closes out the 2012 regular season with three-straight home games in a six day span at Eagle Field including a pair of night contests. GSU hosts Furman on Friday night at Eagle Field from 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Eagles face Wofford on Senior Day 2012 at 2 p.m. The 2012 regular season comes to an end on Wednesday, October 24th against Davidson from 7 p.m.
Georgia Southern enters the weekend tied for ninth place in the SoCon with seven points. The Eagles trail Western Carolina by a single point for the final spot in the tournament and are three points back of College of Charleston for seventh place. Sharing ninth place with the Eagles is The Citadel on seven points, followed by Wofford with five points.
Sydnie Van Curen leads the Georgia Southern offense with five goals. Senior Courtney Collins, who will be honored along with the fellow seniors Zoe Van Gorder, Carlee Storey and Morgan Springer before Sunday’s game, has four goals this season and 13 for her career.
Georgia Southern’s defensive corps has allowed less than a goal a game with six shutouts this season. Goalkeeper Katie Merson has made 69 saves in goal for a 0.95 goals against average in 1,520 total minutes between the pipes.
Furman is 11-3-2 overall this year with a 4-2-2 mark in conference play, ranking fourth in the league with 14 points. Freshman Stephanie DeVita has 16 goals this year in 16 matches, accounting for nearly half of the Paladins’ 34 goals this year. The Furman defense has allowed just 11 goals while posting seven shutouts and a 0.67 goals against average.
Wofford enters the weekend at 6-7-2 and 1-5-2 in conference play with a Friday night trip to Davidson scheduled before the Terriers come to Statesboro. Wofford’s top scorer, Emily Bougas, has three goals while Maureen Buff has two goals and five assists on the year. Defensively the Terriers have allowed 19 goals in 15 matches while scoring 15 total goals.
