Georgia Southern Falls, 2-1, at Georgia State
ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer earned a gutsy equalizer late in the first half, but surrendered a second half goal to take a 2-1 loss at Georgia State on Friday afternoon (September 9th). The win for Georgia State was their first of the season against five previous losses. The Eagles fall to 1-3-1 on the year.
Georgia State scored the match's first goal in the fifth minute from Jewel Evans. The Panther forward kicked a loose ball in the area into the net for a 1-0 Georgia State advantage.
Sophomore Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) brought the Eagles to level terms in the 44th minute with her third goal of the season. The forward took the ball from the top of the 18-yard box and powered a shot past the Panther goalkeeper into the top left corner of the goal.
The Eagles had a chance to take the lead eight minutes into the second half with the first penalty of the season. Carlee Storey (Medford, Ore.) took the spot kick that was saved by the Panther goalkeeper.
In the 62nd minute, Georgia State netted what would prove to be the game winning goal off the boot of Alison Gonzalez. The ball was lofted in from the corner to Gonzalez in the box who tapped the ball across the line for a 2-1 Panther lead.
The Eagles out-shot the Panthers, 10-7 on the day, but failed to earn a corner kick while conceding eight Georgia State corners.
The Eagles return to Statesboro before facing Charleston Southern on Sunday, September 11th, at 4 p.m. Georgia Southern's next home match is on Friday, September 16th, against USC Upstate at Eagle Field starting at 4 p.m.
