Women's Soccer Hits the Road for Two Weekend Matches
STATESBORO, Ga. - Fresh off their win on Senior Day the Georgia Southern women's soccer team (1-14-0, 1-7-0) will travel to the central time zone to face SoCon foes Samford (10-1-3, 5-1-2) and Chattanooga (6-6-1, 1-6-1) this weekend.
The Eagles split last weekend's SoCon matches falling to Furman 2-0 Friday, but they pulled out a 3-2 win against Wofford on Sunday. Senior Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.) headed in the game-winner against the Terriers for her first career goal. The Eagles struck first and fought back from a 2-1 deficit to send the 2009 seniors out a winner in their final home match. Georgia Southern also recorded a season-high 14 shots, nine of which came on goal. Danae Kaimuloa (Escondido, Calif.) led the attack with five shots and a goal.
Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) leads the attack for the Eagles and has tallied two goals in her last four matches. Oland paces the team in goals, points and shots.
Samford won both of their weekend matches, defeating UNC Greensboro and Elon. Leah Leppert was also named SoCon Player of the Week after scoring goals in both matches. Leppert added the game-winner against Elon and tied the match with the Spartans.
The Bulldogs are led on offense by Amber Cress. Cress leads the team in goals, points and shots on goals. Samford has been stellar on defense posting a 0.27 goals against average. Alyssa Whitehead has started all 14 games in net and has allowed only four goals all season.
The match with the Bulldogs is set for Friday at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
Chattanooga lost both weekend matches including a tight 1-0 decision to UNC Greensboro Sunday. The Mocs are on a four game losing streak, but opened the season with five straight wins.
Becca Smith leads the team in goals, points and shots on goal. Smith has tallied three game-winners as well. The defense has posted a respectable 1.42 goals against average. Taylor Davidson has started the whole season in net for Chattanooga and has posted three shutouts.
The Eagles will face the Mocs at 2 p.m. Sunday in Chattanooga, Tenn.
