Eagles Open SoCon Play, Host The Citadel
STATESBORO, Ga. The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team continues its three-game homestand, Wednesday at Eagle Field, as it opens up Southern Conference competition against The Citadel. The clash is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
The Eagles (0-4-0) are looking to bounce back after a tough 2-1, double-overtime loss to non-conference foe Mercer, last Friday (Sep. 14). The Citadel comes to Statesboro with a 1-5-0 overall record, having recently fallen to Presbyterian 5-0, last Friday at Charleston, S.C.
The two schools have met on six occasions and the Eagles hold a 6-0 series advantage, having last defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 in Charleston (Sep. 29, 2006). In that match-up, Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robins, Ga.) notched a pair of goals to lead the Eagles to victory. Heather Smith (Kingwood, Texas) added a winner and an assist, while teammate Susanne Rogers (Augusta, Ga.) tallied another insurance goal.
The Eagles are led in the goals category by Toussaint and Holli Finneren (Lake Orion, Mich.) with a goal, apiece. Senior goalkeeper Laura-Ashley Harris (Jonesboro, Ga.) has seen continuous time in the cage the past two-and-a-half matches, seeing over 241 minutes, facing 32 shots and making 15 saves.
Captained by head coach Bob Winch, The Citadel is led on offense by Jessa Scott with one goal. Britni Bunnell has seen the most time as goalkeeper, with 270 minutes and 23 saves.
The game is part of a doubleheader with the men’s soccer team, which will pit North Florida against the Eagles at 5 p.m.
Shane’s Rib Shack will be offering concessions at both the games.
