Cross Country Heads to Charlotte Invitational

Statesboro, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Cross Country team returns to action on Friday, September 30 at 4 p.m. at the fourth annual Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Forty-three teams will converge on historic McAlpine Creek Park for the 5K event.

It has been almost three weeks since the Eagles last competed on the running trails and Head Coach Marlo Mincey has used the practice sessions to prepare her team mentally and physically.

"We've been working the past few weeks to increase our workload," said Mincey. "Everyone is really beginning to understand the race plans and how to work together as a team to be successful."

The course at McAlpine Creek Park is known for producing fast times. At last year's event, junior Sara Curry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) ran a then third-best time (18:54.9) in Georgia Southern cross country history to help lead the Eagles to a 14th place finish.

The Eagles have posted back-to-back third place finishes to begin the 2011 campaign, led by Curry and freshmen twin-sisters Rebecca and Rachel Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.). Rebecca posted the second fastest time (18:45) in Georgia Southern history three weeks ago in Charleston and has two top-10 finishes to start the season. Rachel Greenwall has posted two top-20 finishes in 2011 including a 14th place finish (19:25) in her last competition.

"This week in Charlotte we are expecting consistency from our team," said Mincey. "We would love for each student-athlete to achieve a personal best, but it's equally important to continue developing each race as a team."
