Lady Eagles Soar Past Elon, 64-46

ELON, N.C. – Ashley Melson and Jessica Geiger combined for 23 points to lead the Georgia Southern women’s basketball team to a 64-46 Southern Conference victory over Elon, Monday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

Melson (Newnan, Ga.) led the team with 12 points while Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) tallied 11 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double, matching a season-high eight rebounds to lead the team.

Georgia Southern wins back-to-back wins on the road and improves to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Elon falls to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in league action.

Five Lady Eagles each scored a bucket in the first six minutes to produce a 10-1 run before Elon made its first field goal at 13:32, and Georgia Southern claimed a 10-3 lead that set the pace for the rest of the contest.

The Lady Eagles went into the break with a 15-point advantage, 31-16, after putting together a strong shooting performance from the field, hitting 13-of-29 (4.8%) field goal attempts. Elon struggled from the field, making 6-of-29 (20.7%) in the first half.

In second-half action, Elon managed to close the lead down to 14 points. But GSU produced a 26-point lead with 10:34 remaining in the game after Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) capped a 15-3 scoring run over a seven-minute span to put the Lady Eagles up 52-26.

Georgia Southern put forth a strong performance inside the paint and led the Phoenix 34-24 in points in the paint. Sophomore forward J’Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) matched a career-high eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Although Elon led the rebounds category, 40-37, the Lady Eagles outscored Elon 13-4 in second-chance points.

Georgia Southern hit 25-of-54 (46.3%) attempts from the field, bettering Elon’s 19-of-60 (31.7%) field goal shooting.

Georgia Southern finished the two-game road trip with a pair of wins and will return home to Statesboro to begin a four-game homestand. The Lady Eagles face Wofford, Saturday (Jan. 12) at 3 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.
