Georgia Southern Welcomes Chattanooga to Begin 2009
The Lady Eagles (8-5, 3-1) come into the contest having won two of their last three games. Georgia Southern was the runner-up in the FIU Sun & Fun Classic in Miami, FL after the Christmas layoff. The Lady Eagles rolled past host school Florida International (Dec. 29) en route to the championship game where they fell to eventual champion, Marist (Dec. 30).
Seniors Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) and Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) were named to the All-Tournament team in Miami. Together the two seniors scored 49 percent of the Eagles’ total points in the tournament. Melson chipped in 28, while Rivens added 24 for the Eagles, equaling 52 points out of the 106 total. Melson is third in the conference in scoring, averaging 14.4 points a game, and is tied for fifth in 3-pointers a game (4.2).
J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) and Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) lead the Eagles in rebounding this season, each averaging 5.8 a game.
Chattanooga (9-5, 5-0) rolls in to Georgia Southern standing atop the Southern Conference standings as they remain undefeated in conference play this season. The Lady Mocs are coming off a 70-53 victory over UNC Greensboro on New Year’s Eve. Two players scored in double figures for Chattanooga, Shanara Hollinquest with 13 and Jenaya Wade-Fray with a team-high 18. Hollinquest leads the league in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game. The junior also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down an average of 8.4 boards a game.
The two teams face off Saturday for the 41st time in GSU history; UTC leads the series, 24-16. Georgia Southern last defeated Chattanooga on January 4, 2005 in Statesboro, 61-53. GSU leads the series in Statesboro, 10-7.
