Women?s Basketball Remains Undefeated in SoCon Play after Defeating Elon 67-58

ELON, N.C. - Georgia Southern (6-2, 2-0) knocks off Elon (1-7, 0-2) 67-58 Saturday afternoon in Alumni Gym in Elon, N.C. and remains undefeated in Southern Conference play.

 

“Win on the road which is major. We didn’t play our best basketball, but our bench stepped up and helped us win the game,” said head coach Rusty Cram.

 

Four players scored in double-figures for the Lady Eagles. Freshman Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) set a new career high with 10 points and Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) broke her career best of 10 set earlier in the season.

 

Georgia Southern got off to a slow start, before leading by as much as 11 in the first half. Navarro and Brittney Nelson (Rochester, Mich.) sparked the Lady Eagles’ offense when they scored on back-to-back plays.

 

Elon cut the lead to 27-26 at the 1:58 mark and the game remained a one point affair until Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) drained a three with time expiring to give Georgia Southern a 32-28 lead at halftime.

 

Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) scored 10 of her team high 15 points in the first half including an early 3-pointer at the 16:32 mark that gave the Lady Eagles their first lead of the game.

 

Georgia Southern used an 8-0 run to quickly open up a double-digit lead in the second half. Navarro scored four of her career high 11 points during the run.

 

The Phoenix cut the lead under 10 points with 14:32 after Courtney Medley drained a jumper for two of her eight points.

 

The Lady Eagles got their biggest lead of the day after a 9-2 run put Georgia Southern up by 16 with 5:46 remaining.

 

Elon managed to pull the lead back under ten points with less than two minutes remaining after Aiesha Harper nailed a layup, but Georgia Southern held onto the lead and won 67-58.

 

Tiffany Davis scored a team high 15 points and was seven of 10 from the free throw line. Elon went to the charity stripe 33 times in the game.

 

Amber Wall pulled down a game high 13 rebounds and helped the Phoenix outrebound the Lady Eagles 42-34.

 

Georgia Southern returns to action December 15th against Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga.
