Lady Eagles Begin Front End of Home-and-Home with Western Carolina

STATESBORO, GA – In an unusual occurrence, Georgia Southern will face Southern Conference foe Western Carolina in a literal home-and-home. The Lady Eagles travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for a 2 p.m. match-up against the Catamounts, Saturday, January 30, before returning to Statesboro to host WCU on Wednesday, February 2 at 5 p.m.

Wednesday’s contest is the rescheduled game from December 19 when the Catamounts were to make their original trip to Statesboro, but were forced to postpone the game due to inclement weather.

Georgia Southern will look to continue its winning streak having won four of its past five contests, three of which were road wins. With recent wins at Elon and UNC Greensboro, the Lady Eagles pushed their record to 11-9 overall and 6-5 in league action. Victorious in North Carolina, GS fought off late second half comeback attempts from both SoCon opponents to seal the wins. Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) set a career-high 15 points at Elon and led all scorers with 10 rebounds at UNCG.

Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) continues to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring on the season, averaging 11.6 points per contest. She is followed by fellow classmate J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) who averages 10.4 ppg and is second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 4.9 boards on average. Senior Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) leads the team on the defensive end, securing 5.1 boards per contest.

Under the direction of first year head coach Karen Middleton, the Western Carolina Catamounts have tallied a 3-16 overall mark and 2-8 league ledger. WCU has defeated SoCon opponents Wofford and Furman for its lone league wins. The Catamounts are currently on a six-game losing streak but took Chattanooga to the wire, falling 66-68 (Jan. 16). WCU most recently dropped a 75-65 decision at Davidson, Jan. 25.

Emily Clarke leads the Catamounts in scoring on the year, averaging 14.4 points per game. The junior also secures 6.0 rebounds per game, but it is sophomore Caitlin Hollifield that leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 rpg.

Georgia Southern took both contests in 2008-09 over Western Carolina and leads the all-time series 28-12. When competing in Cullowhee, the Lady Eagles are 13-5, while being 12-5 on their home court against WCU. Head coach Rusty Cram is 18-10 when facing Western Carolina.
