Stetson Downs Women's Basketball in Hatter Classic
DELAND, Fla. – Jama Sharp scored 16 points, and Victoria McGowan added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Stetson to a 70-39 women's basketball victory over Georgia Southern in the Hatter Classic Tuesday afternoon in the Edmunds Center.
MiMi DuBose led the Eagles (1-6) with 12 points, and Anna Claire Knight scored 10.
Sharp was 7-of-10 from the floor and 2-for-4 from 3-point range for the Hatters (6-4). Ashley Dennis scored 12 points, and Cherisse Burris tallied 11 points and six rebounds.
The Hatters shot 52 percent from the field for the game while holding Georgia Southern to 31 percent. Most of that difference came in the paint, where Stetson outscored the Eagles 34-12. The Hatters also scored 24 points off 21 Eagle turnovers and used 13 offensive rebounds to score 11 second-chance points.
"Early in the game, we got some of the looks we wanted but were not able to finish, and we let that affect us on the defensive end," said Eagle coach Chris Vozab. "There were too many instances on defense where four of us were on the same page and one wasn't or all five were on the same page for 25 seconds, but we didn't finish the possession with a rebound. We can't do that against a team as good as Stetson."
A 10-2 run midway through the first half turned a 15-11 Hatter advantage into a 12-point cushion as McGowan scored the last five points of the stretch. After the Hatters pushed the margin to 14 points on a McGowan triple with 3:37 left in the half, DuBose answered with a conventional 3-point play and Ronnesha Smith drilled a jumper to trim the lead to single digits.
Sharp scored on a jumper, and then added a 3-pointer with seven seconds left on the clock to give the Hatters a 38-24 cushion at the break. The sophomore then scored four points in an 11-5 run to start the second half as the Hatters opened a 20-point lead. GSU was never able to get within striking distance for the rest of the way.
The Eagles continue action in the Hatter Classic tomorrow against Bethune-Cookman. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
