Davidson Downs Women's Basketball 61-49 in SoCon Opener
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year Sophia Aleksandravicius netted a season high 24 points and added 10 rebounds and eight blocks to lead Davidson to a 61-49 women's basketball victory over Georgia Southern in the league opener for both teams.
MiMi DuBose matched her season high of 21 points to go along with a career-high seven rebounds for Georgia Southern (1-3, 0-1 SoCon). The junior guard was 8-of-14 from the floor and hit four of her seven 3-point tries.
The double-double was Aleksandracivius' second in a row, third of the season and 33rd of her career. The senior was 10-of-22 from the floor and hit all four of her free-throw attempts.
Turnovers were the difference as Georgia Southern committed 27, which led to 25 points for the Wildcats (2-4, 1-0 SoCon).
"We talk a lot about valuing the basketball, and any time we turn the ball over as much as we did today, it makes it difficult to win a college basketball game, especially against an opponent as good as Davidson," said GSU coach Chris Vozab. "I thought we defended well in the first half, but there were too many instances in the second half where breakdowns allowed Aleksandravicius to get into her rhythm deep in the paint."
Davidson led by as many 15 points three different times in the second period after taking a 30-21 lead into the break. Aleksandravicius twice gave the Wildcats its biggest lead of the game at 48-33 and 50-35 on turnaround jumpers at the 9:41 and 6:19 marks.
Dubose got the Eagles to within nine after a trey from the wing to make it 54-45 with 3:53 remaining, but sophomore Shannon Eriksson answer that triple with one of her own on the Wildcats' next possession and the lead never went below 10 the rest of the way.
Eagle guard Meredyth Frye hit a 3-pointer to make the score 12-10 in favor of the Wildcats early in the first half. But Davidson's Hannah Early sparked a 13-4 run over the next seven minutes with a triple and the lead grew to 25-14. Aleksandravicius scored four points during the run.
The Eagles cap their four game road trip with a 6 p.m. contest at Appalachian State.
