Women?s Basketball Returns to Action at UNC Greensboro

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women’s basketball team will resume Southern Conference action as it plays its first game of the new year, Saturday (Jan. 5) at UNC Greensboro. Tip-off versus the Spartans is slated for 12 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.

Georgia Southern (5-8, 1-1) looks to halt a two-game skid that began at the VCU Christmas tournament in Richmond, Va. (Dec. 27-28). UNC Greensboro (3-10, 1-1) picked up its second-consecutive win and first Southern Conference victory after defeating Furman (Jan. 2) by a 66-54 decision.

UNC Greensboro holds a 16-10 all-time series lead over the Lady Eagles since their first meeting in 1997, but Georgia Southern claims the last victory. GSU eliminated the Spartans from the 2007 SoCon tournament in the semifinals game by an 81-64 decision (Mar. 1). The win snapped a four-game skid versus the Spartans. The last time the Lady Eagles defeated UNCG at Greensboro was in 2003, 64-54. The Spartans last beat GSU earlier last year (Feb. 5) by a 68-60 score at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Georgia Southern is paced by senior guard Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) in both scoring (11.5) and rebounding (5.6) averages. Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) follows with 11.1 points per game while Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) pulls down 4.8 rebounds per contest.

Spartans’ Kemena Brooks leads the team in the scoring category with 8.9 per game. Gini Grimsley follows with 7.2 points per contest while Brittany Frazier grabs 5.2 rebounds per outing.

Head coach Rusty Cram, a 1985 graduate of Louisiana Tech, is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles and carries a 172-159 record. He is the winningest women’s basketball coach at Georgia Southern.

Lynne Agee is in her 27th year at UNCG and is in her 30th career season as head coach. She claims a 514-233 school record and a 560-256 career slate.

The game will be called by Georgia Southern Radio Network’s Ryan Chambers on 102.9 FM, WPMX in Statesboro, or on the World Wide Web at www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
