Lady Eagles Begin Final Homestand Entertaining Furman
The Lady Eagles are coming off back-to-back road losses to the top two teams in the Southern Conference, Chattanooga and Samford. Georgia Southern will look to rebound and complete a regular season sweep over the Furman Paladins on Saturday. The first contest between the two teams took place on January 17 in Greenville, S.C. Senior Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) lifted the Lady Eagles past the Paladins, 74-69, with a game-high 21 points. Georgia Southern shot 49 percent from the field to Furman’s 36 percent in a game that witnessed three lead changes and five ties.
Georgia Southern (14-10, 9-6) stands in fourth place on the SoCon leader board coming off a 55-47 loss to Samford (Feb. 9). Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had one of her best performances of the season against the Bulldogs, chipping in a game-high 12 points for the Lady Eagles. Brittney Nelson (Rochester, Mich.) secured a team-high nine rebounds (eight defensive). Samford took 26 trips to the charity stripe to Georgia Southern’s five.
Continuing to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring this season is senior Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) who averages 12.5 points per game. J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) paces Georgia Southern in rebounding, pulling down 5.5 boards per game on average. Ogburn is followed by Geiger who averages 5.4 rebounds per contest.
Furman (11-14, 5-11) enters Saturday’s contest coming off a 57-42 loss at Western Carolina. Sarah Baker paced the Paladins with 13 points, followed by Melissa Liebschwager who contributed 12 points. Four players each secured five rebounds in the loss. Lee Stephens paces the Paladins on the season in scoring, contributing on average 15.8 points per game. Baker leads Furman in rebounding with 5.6 boards per contest.
Georgia Southern holds a 25-17 all-time series edge over Furman and an 11-6 tally in Statesboro. Head coach Rusty Cram is 13-14 when facing the Paladins, who are 3-9 overall this season on the road, 2-6 against conference opponents.
