Men?s Tennis Opens Conference Play on Sunday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men’s Tennis team will continue its stretch of home matches while opening conference play on Sunday. The Eagles will play host to UNC Greensboro at noon at Hanner Tennis Complex. The Eagles were initially slated to open conference play against Davidson on Saturday, but a forecast of heavy rain pushed the match back to Wednesday.

“Sunday we get a great gift; our record goes back to 0-0,” said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. “We need to take advantage of that and play in the present for the whole match. None of our prior scores affect Sunday’s match. We need to stay focused on the now, not letting our minds slip back and think about past losses and not jumping to the future to worry about how we are going to finish the match, just be relentlessly focused on the now. If we can do that through all our matches, we are going to breakthrough.”

The Eagles (1-8) are coming off a tough stretch of matches against non-conference opponents. Five of their eight losses have been to teams with winning records. Four freshmen, Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.), Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain), Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.), and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) have gained significant experience in tight matches throughout the first part of the season that should only benefit them going into conference play. They have been accompanied in the starting lineup by seasoned veterans Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain), Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), and Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria).

UNC Greensboro is 3-5 on the season. The Eagles last defeated the Spartans in 2008 and have a 7-10 all-time record in the series. Garrido, a senior, sports a 2-1 overall singles record in his career against the Spartans.
