Eagles Victorious at Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships

ATHENS, GA – Three Eagles of the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team picked up consolation victories on the second day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships contested on the campus of the University of Georgia.  Senior Gregory Bekkers and freshmen Juan Melian-Puigventos and Matthijis Verdam all notched singles victories.

After recording a straight set triumph in the opening round of main draw singles action, sophomore Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) suffered a straight set, 6-0, 6-0, loss to Elliot Potvin of Georgia Tech to open action on the day.

Competing in the consolation back draw, Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) picked up a win over Florida Gulf Coast’s Matt Rock, 6-2, 6-3, while teammate Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) notched a triumph over Hector Nieto of Miami, 7-5, 6-4.

Recording a hard-fought contest, freshman Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) took a straight set victory over Georgia Tech’s Austin Roebuck. After capturing the first set, 7-5, Roebuck and Puigventos forced a second-set tiebreak, in which the Eagle prevailed, 7-6 (1). Closing out action for Georgia Southern, senior Justin Flynn (Dublin, Ireland) suffered a super-tiebreak loss to Anderson Reed of Florida State. Flynn grabbed the second set, 6-3, after dropping the first by the same margin, forcing a deciding tiebreak. Keeping the tiebreak close, Reed defeated Flynn, 10-6.

Georgia Southern will conclude its fall tournament schedule at the Alabama Invitational, October 30-31.
