Eagles Wrap Up UNF Fall Invitational
In single elimination doubles action, Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) and Matthijis Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) paired up in flight ‘A’. The duo fell in the opening round to Florida A&M’s David Jackson and Michael Moore, 8-3. Teaming up against Mercer’s Evandro Rosindo and Mark Worsham in flight ‘B’ were Edio Castanhel (Criciuma, Brazil) and Felt (Vienna, Austria). The Bears took an 8-2 decision from the Eagle pair, while fellow teammates Thomas Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) and Alex Yuille (Epsom, England) dropped an 8-1 tally to Belmont’s Rafael Matos and Bruno Silva.
Competing in the ‘A’ singles flight, sophomore Castanhel battled Belmont’s Matos into a three set match. Castanhel dropped the opening stanza, 6-4, but took Matos to a second-set tiebreak where the Eagle was victorious, 7-6 (4). In the deciding third set, Castanhel kept the match close, but dropped a one break tally, 6-4.
Receiving a bye in the opening round, senior Bekkers took on Jimmy Esteban of Jacksonville University in second round action. After splitting the first two sets by identical 6-4 marks, Esteban overcame Bekkers in a decisive third set, 7-5. Moving into the consolation back draw, Bekkers took on Yannick Jackson of Bethune-Cookman. Taking a tight opening set, 7-5, the Eagle obliterated Jackson in the second set, 6-1. However, Bekkers suffered an injury in the next round against North Florida’s Graham Edgar and was forced to retire.
Forced to retire in the opening round, freshman Verdam fell to Evandro Rosindo of Mercer, but bounced back in the consolation draw crushing Belmont’s Joao Paoliello in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Verdam then took on Marc Misanovic of Bethune-Cookman, but suffered a straight 6-2,6-2 defeat.
Appearing in ‘B’ singles were Eagles Yuille, Felt and Bekkers. Yuille dropped a 6-0,6-2 tilt to Zach Zola of Belmont. Felt, meanwhile, after a first round bye, suffered a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Florida A&M’s Michael Moore, but picked up a victory over Jeff Smallwood of Bethune-Cookman in the back draw, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9. Felt advanced to the quarterfinals after Jacksonville’s Logan Shalmi retired in the round of 8. The freshman battled Ohir Weintraub (East Tennessee State) in the semifinals taking the match into three sets. Grabbing the first set, 6-4, Felt fell in the second, 6-3, forcing a third set tiebreak. Felt kept the tiebreak close, but fell 10-5 to Weintraub.
Junior Bekkers fell in the opening round of ‘B’ singles action to Mercer’s Victor Diaz, but rebounded in the back draw with a triumph over Jason Ramski of East Tennessee State. Bekkers took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second in a tiebreak. In the super tiebreak, Bekkers downed Ramski, 10-4. Taking on Jonny Murrell in the quarterfinals, Bekkers came back after dropping the first set to take the second, 6-1. The Eagle battled hard in the super tiebreak, but fell, 10-8.
Georgia Southern returns to the court at the ITA Regional, October 22-26 in Athens, Ga. and closes out its fall tournament schedule in Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the Alabama Invitational, October 30-November 1.
