Eagles Victorious on Opening Day of Seminole Invitational
The opening day of competition began with singles as Flynn took on Kurt Gattiker of North Florida. The senior Eagle, who hails from Dublin, Ireland, cruised to a straight-set defeat of the Osprey, 6-3, 6-3, to pick up his first win of the 2009-2010 season and advance to the second round. Flynn faced off against Andres Bucaro of host school Florida State in round two, but suffered a 6-2, 6-0, loss to the Seminole.
Also in the “A” draw, sophomore Edio Castanhel battled against Florida’s Dan Cash, but Cash outlasted Castanhel, 6-3, 6-1. The Eagle then moved into the consolation singles bracket where Yannick Yoshizawa of South Florida captured a 6-4, 6-1 win over Castanhel.
Competing for the first time as an Eagle, Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos opened his collegiate career in the “B” draw. The freshman (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) took on North Florida’s Daniel Sotomarino in round one. The Eagle dropped the first set, 6-3, but pushed in the second set as he fought the Osprey. However, Sotomarino edged Melian Puigventos, 7-5, in the second set to take the match win.
Also in “B” singles, Garrido crushed Jeff Smallwood of Bethune-Cookman in the opening round to pick up his second singles victory of the fall campaign. The sophomore Eagle (Vigo, Spain) took the win in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1, advancing to the second round where he suffered a loss to Tommy Pertrich of UAB, 6-3, 6-0.
The first round of doubles action also took place on day one of the fall tournament. Competing as a tandem in flight “A”, Castanhel and Flynn paired up to take on Moritz Buerchner and Gattiker of North Florida. The Eagle pair dropped a hard-fought match, 8-5, to the Osprey pair. In “B” doubles, Garrido and Puigventos paired against Central Florida’s Joe Delinks and Eugene Dolgovykh. The Eagles battled the Knights hard, but fell, 8-5, in the match.
Day two of competition begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the winner’s bracket of singles action followed by singles consolation. Doubles action will take place in the afternoon.
